An exciting hot and sweet combo, honey habanero fits the profile for your new snack seasoning flavor debut.

Chilies continue to be popular flavor profiles for mainstream America; you are seeing them appear in traditional toppings, rubs, chips and dressings.  Habanero is even making its way into sweets and chocolate.

Millennials Driving Change In The World Of Burgers

Posted on Thu, Jan, 2015@ 12:28 AM

The Carolina Ingredients blogosphere is firing up again and this time it is about burgers and millennials. Pundits reveal millennials want spicy flavors and new exciting combinations, paired with healthier options like turkey or vegetarian and always including “fresh” toppings.

McDonald’s revealed they are testing “build your own” burgers in certain locations. Chains like 5 Guys continue to expand. Larkburger, the chef-driven burger concept in Colorado, has created a buzz in food trend magazines. Yelp even has “Best Burgers in [name your location]” for major cities across the US.

All of this hype has been sparked by the millenial generation to break the mold of the mundane burgers that we all got so accustomed to.

This month, industrial seasoning distributor Carolina Ingredients worked to develop some new burger flavors as part of our ideation process. Our favorite was Green Chili Black Bean. Mild heat from the green chili and nuttiness from the black bean create a lovely flavor profile for our turkey burger. Additionally, the black bean flakes add great visual notes. This versatile seasoning blend can be used to make a meat based or vegetarian based burger.

What new burger trends have you seen that goes far outside the box?

Why a snack seasonings partner is right for you

Posted on Mon, Dec, 2014@ 09:47 AM

After developing a new idea for a snack seasoning or flavor, do you develop that new flavor seasoning in-house or seek out a strategic partner to develop the flavor seasoning for you?

For many businesses, Carolina Ingredients is that strategic partner. We firmly believe that the best partnerships exist when each entity focuses on what they do best. In our case, that’s developing innovative flavor trends for the many channels of commercial food production.

Our process is simple: Focus on the customer throughout every step. We live by the mantra, “How may we create value for you?”

gingerbread man partnership blog resized 600

Do you have a new idea for a holiday ginger bread cookie? Let us start thinking about it in March. Do you want to create a new buffalo ranch flavored popcorn just in time for the start of football tailgating? We will start planning around the time of this year’s innagural NCAA Football Championship series.

Though our average sales cycle is six months to a year, we are able to work under very tight deadlines, as short as 1 month. Why the long average sales cycle? It takes time to bring a new product to market and get it right.

At Carolina Ingredients, we:

  • Act as a strategic partner
  • Push the boundaries to make our products healthier and safer
  • Research the best ingredients, flavors and blends with dedication and patience from our Research & Development team
  • Ensure that your bottom line for new products will be as profitable as it can be by partnering our sales and R&D teams

Yes, we are thorough! But we capitalize on timely seasoning trends also. With the recent popularity of Korean BBQ and Sriracha, we wanted to join in on all the fun and produce some of these unique flavor trends on our own, with an added twist.

Bringing this type of innovation in-house can certainly pose a challenge. Looking at the bottom line throughout the entire process, every failed attempt at “getting it right” is money spent. Add to this the challenge of seeking out facilities to produce your small-batch flavor on a larger scale. Why not allow the creators of your custom blend to oversee and produce it on a large scale?

A strategic partnership is not going to be the best fit for every company in every instance. However, when faced with a decision to tackle this on your own or allow our flavor-craftsmen to tackle it for you, consider bringing on a talented team that has done this for nearly 25 years.

We learn much and innovate often – Allow us to use this knowledge to create value for you!

Pineapple and Brown Sugar Rub Conjures Warm Memories During Cool Months

Posted on Thu, Nov, 2014@ 09:15 AM

We are moving into fall, when the mornings remind us that summer has again departed and falling leaves prepare us for winter.  Holidays are right around the corner and many of us yearn to locate to warmer locales where we can wait until crocuses begin to emerge from the ground, signaling a new season.

Spice distributor Carolina Ingredient’s most recent flavor innovation is Pineapple Brown Sugar Rub. Sweet acidity with warm spicy notes pairs well with pork or beef.  It conjures memories of fall gatherings with family and friends when applied to whole ham. Beef ribs take on an island festive flavor when coated with this blend and smoked, allowing us to imagine the sun above and sand below.

Southern Cuisine - A New Snack Seasoning, Spicy Pimento Cheese

Posted on Tue, Oct, 2014@ 08:00 AM

Southern Cuisine is no longer found just in the south - its popularity is expanding as well known chefs begin to highlight traditional southern dishes and trends in their menus. Now, it is common to see pimento cheese used in other ways. No longer solely a dip or sandwich spread, you now find pimento cheese burgers, pimento grilled cheese sandwiches to deep fried pimento cheese balls. The Varsity, an Atlanta landmark, serves pimento cheese with chili on their hotdogs.

pimento cheese email

Pimento Cheese, comfort food, now has multiple variations --from changing the types of cheese to peppers in this lovely mix. You’ll find cheddar, jack, American, and even changes based upon “cleaning” out the refrigerator cheese drawer. Originally with pimentos, a popular crop grown in the south until the 1960’s, jalapenos, piquillos, and other peppers are used to transform this Southern dish into a fusion blend.

Carolina Ingredient’s ideation for October is Spicy Pimento Cheese. Smooth and creamy cheese blend plus heat from different chili peppers mix with a zing of garlic. We formulated this as a snack seasoning; however, we can modify this winner to be used as a blend in for sauces, soups or dressings. Even better, how about a spicy pimento cheese “Hot Pocket” type snack?

Sriracha Stir-up for Spice Distributors

Posted on Thu, Apr, 2014@ 11:01 AM

Sriracha, one of the most popular flavoring choices and sauces, is back in the news to seasoning suppliers’ dismay. This time with the ruling that Sriracha production at the Huy Fong Foods’ factory in Irwindale, California is a “public nuisance.”

This ruling has lead many to incorrectly fear that this favorite flavor may be facing limited production and distribution. But we predict that Sriracha will remain a flavoring favorite, with the inventory to support your customers’ spicy indulgence.

At Carolina Ingredients, we offer a Sriracha seasoning blend – just like the famous and headline-making sauce. A bold garlic flavor compliments the building heat of red chilis, combined with a dash of vinegar to balance the blend.

From marinades to marinara sauce to condiments like Sriracha mayo and ketchup, this versatile flavoring has limitless possibilities.

Ethnic Flavors Continue Upward Trend in Snack Seasoning

Posted on Mon, Mar, 2014@ 11:00 AM

Ethnic flavors continue to be very popular in snack seasoning trends. We anticipate seeing the popularity of the pepper continue well into 2014. We’re no longer talking about just ancho and jalapeno, as peppers like hatch, datil, aleppo, and mini purple move into the mainstream.

Our R&D team is constantly developing new combinations to stay ahead of these trends.

  • Hatch Green Chili & Cheese – a New Mexican roasted, mild green chili compliments creamy cheddar cheese
  • Aleppo Pepper – a chili of complex flavor and mild heat, originating in the Middle East, builds slowly in this rub, allowing the other flavors to come forward
  • Hatch Carnitas – warm roasted flavors, combined with cumin and chili, create an exceptional rub for poultry or pork
  • Non-GMO Za’tar – this snack seasoning boasts an herby and bright flavor with sumac notes and sweetness from basil

Integrating unique ingredients into current flavor profiles is a great way to highlight ethnic tastes and give customers new and exciting flavors. How are you taking advantage of specific cuisines and flavor trends?
